Switzerland’s most famous mountain, the Matterhorn, is covered in flags in April, a different one each night, all virtually, part of an ongoing tribute to countries seriously affected by Covid-19.
The American flag is being displayed on Thursday, April 16th.
These are gi-normous reflected projections of flags, cover the 14,600-foot Swiss peak, one of the most famous and recognized mountains in the world.
The projections are designed by Swiss artist Gerry Hofstetter, known for making art on massive objects using light.
There’s also live streaming of the projections.

The flags of countries include United States of America, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Portugal and Italy, a different flag each night, along with messages including “Stay at Home” and “Hope.”.
The village of Zermatt, located in the valley just below the Matterhorn, wants these light projections to provide a sign of hope and solidarity with the people suffering, and to show thanks to all those helping to overcome the crisis.

“As it stands, the U.S.A. is the country that has been most impacted by the COVID-19 crisis with the highest number of confirmed cases,” Zermatt Tourism’s website states. “Our thoughts are with all American people at this unprecedented time. May our message convey solidarity and give you hope and strength…we are all in this together.”

I love Zermatt. I’ve visited in summer and in winter. I prefer winter, since skiing on the Matterhorn glacier is some of the best skiing in the world. And the view of the Matterhorn as you ski is beyond magnificent.
