Best green hotels in USA: The Henry in Dearborn, Michigan

How appropriate that at the same time the Ford Motor Company is making headlines for producing green, energy efficient vehicles such as the Focus and Fiesta, a hotel named for company founder Henry Ford has earned a top rating from Green Lodging Michigan and the Michigan Dept. of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth.

The hotel is The Henry, an Autograph Collection Hotel, in Dearborn, Michigan, in Ford headquarters hometown.  The green hotel award cites the hotel’s environmental initiatives, including energy and water conservation, reducing waste, and purchasing green, eco-friendly products for cleaning and other supplies.

Like most hotels these days, The Henry has implemented a linen and towel reuse program, and uses  low flow fixtures to conserve water. There also is an active recycling program for  paper, aluminum, cardboard, plastic, and others. Energy efficient Energy Star lighting has been installed throughout the hotel, including compact fluorescent bulbs in chandeliers and wall sconces, and energy efficient flat screen televisions. The Henry also utilizes a  water system that takes advantage of free cooling during favorable weather conditions.

The Henry is operated by Marriott, which has one of the strongest environmental programs in the hotel business. In 2009, this eco-green hotel company announced goals of opening or renovating hundreds of LEED Certified green hotels, mostly for its Courtyard brand.  Marriott also supports charity programs including rainforest protection and water conservation.

Rates start at $119 a night. The Henry is on Fairlane Plaza.  Anybody remember the Ford Fairlane, one of the most popular sedans and convertibles of the 1950s and 1960s.  There’s even a Fairlane Club of America, dedicated to preserving, driving, and showing off these automotive icons.
