BMW is unveiling a fully-electric compact coupe at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2010. The concept BMW 1-Series prototype is called the Concept ActiveE.
The BMW 1-Series electric concept will have lithium ion batteries, and the packs are placed in the spot a conventional drive train would be in a conventional gas or diesel BMW.

According to Jalopnik, the electric BMW will go into limited production and leasing in 2010.
This will be the second electric car from the BMW Group. The first was the plug-in electric Mini E. BMW competitor Audi already has announced an all-electric sportscar, the E-Tron, based on the R8 supercar, will go into production in 2010. The E-Tron was previewed at the Frankfurt Auto Show in Sept. 2009.
