Airlines Expand Starlink Service

There is always something new to report about our airlines and airports.

This update of airlines adding Starlink service for in-flight news and entertainment ranges from top carriers to those we usually describe as budget airlines.  Because it’s all about competition.

Engineered by SpaceX, Starlink delivers an unparalleled broadband experience in flight, with high-speed, low-latency WiFi capable of HD streaming, online gaming, productivity and more.

Starlink is widely regarded as the world’s most advanced satellite constellation using a low Earth orbit to deliver broadband internet capable of supporting inflight streaming, online gaming, collaborative meeting tools and more.

Starlink functions via a constellation of more than 7,000 satellites, which allows internet connections in remote locations, such as flying over an ocean. The satellites are in low-earth orbit, which means faster internet speeds.

United Airlines

customers won’t miss a play this football season, thanks to a new agreement between the airline and DISH.

Starting now, passengers  can catch live professional and college football games right on flights with Starlink-enabled seatback screen.

Starlink is the fastest, most reliable Wi-Fi in the sky and United is installing Starlink at a rapid rate – and, fans can now watch live broadcasts from ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, FS1, ESPN, ESPN2, NFL Network and TNF on Prime Video on more than 200 Starlink-equipped airplanes – about 700 of flights per day.

The service will be available on domestic flights through the big game in February, and United expects to have Starlink on nearly 700 airplanes by then.

Starlink is free for MileagePlus members in every class of service, and the airline expects to complete installations before the end of 2027.

American Airlines

American Airlines is planning a sweeping modernization of more than 500 of its narrowbody aircraft with  Starlink, beginning in Q1 2027, for both domestic and short-haul international routes.

American plans to update its Wi-Fi offering on its fleet of more than 500 Airbus aircraft, including new A321XLR and A321neo deliveries.

Frontier Airlines

The budget carrir plans to launch its first Starlink-equipped aircraft in early 2027 and will be the first US airline to offer passengers access to Starlink’s high-speed internet through a new system managed directly by Starlink.

Beyond what a press release describes as “enhancing the customer experience”, Starlink will provide gate-to-gate connectivity for Frontier’s pilots, flight attendants, maintenance teams, and ground operations, for improved operational performance and customer service.

Frontier and fellow Indigo Partners portfolio airlines Wizz Air (Europe), Volaris (Mexico), JetSMART (South America), and Cebu Pacific (Philippines) expect to install Starlink on over 1,000 aircraft.

The deployment represents one of the largest global commitments to next-generation inflight connectivity, with the airlines bringing low fares, and access to reliable WiFi provided through a new system managed directly by Starlink.

Lufthansa Group

The German flag carrier plans to have Starlink throughout its fleet by the end of 2026, including its  group of national carriers for Austria, Belgium, Italy (ITA, formerly Italia), and Switzerland (Swiss, formerly Swissair).

That means a fleet of around 850 aircraft across all its airlines.

Qatar Airlines also offers Starlink.

Alternatives to Starlink

According  to Business Insider, Starlink isn’t the only game in town.

JetBlue has signed up for Amazon Leo, which functions similarly, but has only launched 150 satellites so far.
