Eco-conscious newlyweds Prince Harry and Meghan Markle drove from the luncheon after their wedding at Windsor Castle to an evening reception in a zero-emissions Jaguar electric vehicle.
It is an EV conversion of the classic Jaguar E-Type, which Enzo Ferrari once described as “the most beautiful car in the world”.
The new Duke and Duchess of Sussex travelled to the Frogmore House after-party in a silver Jaguar E-Type Concept Zero, a modern electric car based on the 1968 British classic.
According to the British newspaper The Sun, Royal officials specially leased the $500,000 concept car from Jaguar for the day, even outfitting it out with a special bespoke license plate that spells out the date of the wedding.
The luxury car is thought to have been a special request from the environmentally-conscious couple.
Jaguar E-Type Concept Zero Speed and Power
Unlike a conventionally powered Jaguar, the E-Type Zero makes almost zero noise. There’s no throaty sports car roar.
The Jaguar E-Type Concept Zero can hit 60mph in just 5.5 seconds and boasts a specially made 220kW engine, and has a ‘real world’ range of 270km (about 170 miles), helped by its low weight and aerodynamics.
The 40kWh battery can be recharged in six to seven hours, depending on the power source.
The Jaguar E-Type Zero is powered by a 300 hp electric motor under its legendarily long hood, and it is quicker than the original E-Type, able to launch from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 5.5 seconds. That’s about one second faster than a Series 1 E-Type with a conventional gas engine. Or as the Brits call it, petrol.
The 40kWh battery can be recharged in six to seven hours, depending on the power source.
According to Electric Car Report, the electric powertrain has similar weight and dimensions to the outgoing gas/petrol engine and transmission, so it wasn’t necessary to alter the car’s structure, including suspension and brakes, simplifying the conversion. It drives, handles, rides and brakes like an original E-type.
Eagle-eyed Royal fans also noticed that it was a left-hand drive model. It could be a nod to Meghan’s US heritage, or to Jaguar’s focus electric cars for the US market.
I think Harry was being chivalrous, allowing his beautiful bride to be on the same side of the car as all the wedding photographers.
Jaguar also is introducing an all-electric SUV, the E-Pace, a perfect choice for any family, including the future family of the Duke and Duchess.
It’s much more affordable than the sports car, with a starting price of $69.500, a 240 mile battery range, and can accelerate 0 to 60 in a respectable 5.5 seconds.
