Fisker Ronin EV Sportscar Technical Innovations

Fisker Ronin EV sportscar

California-based EV manufacturer Fisker is known for cutting-edge technology and design, and its third model offers a lot of both.

The new Fisker Ronin EV sportscar features such innovations as the battery pack integrated into the structure of the vehicle and the longest battery range of any production EV.

Ronin is the third Fisker model, following the Fisker Ocean sedan and Fisker PEAR crossover.

It is not clear from the announcement whether the new sportscar will have a solar roof, such as the one on the Ocean.

It can  supply an additional 2,000 miles of range per year, under ideal conditions, and 1,500 under typical sunny skies in regions such as California.  Such solar roofs power heating and cooling, and other devices I call “creature features”, but not the motor, which saves battery range.

“The aim is to achieve the world’s longest range for a production EV, combined with extremely high levels of performance,” CEO Henrik Fisker said in announcing the new model.

“Project Ronin will be a showcase for our internal engineering, powertrain, and software capabilities.”

Fisker is one of several boutique manufacturers chasing the leader, Tesla, with distinctive style and features.

And Henrik Fisker knows something about cars – he was a longtime designer and engineer for BMW and Aston Martin, famous for its James Bond cars.

While pricing, range and other specs are not yet available, it is expected the new Fisker Ronin will be moderately priced, in the $30,000 to $40,000 range, as are his other models, Ocean and PEAR.

The Ronin name was inspired by the film of the same title, with its famous car chases.

Development started with the goal of creating a futuristic Grand Touring sports car suitable for long road trips while carrying four adults and their luggage.

It will use advanced, lightweight materials and focus on range, performance, and overall driving experience. In addition to the battery pack integrated into the structure of the vehicle, the Ronin GT will feature unique doors to make it easier to get in and out, and a luxurious, sustainable vegan interior with what’s described as “a new, advanced design direction”.
Fisker expects to reveal Project Ronin in August 2023, with production starting in the second half of 2024.  Pricing, range and other specs are not yet available.

Fisker PEAR is $30,000

Pear is not named for the sweet fruit.  It’s an acronym for Personal Electric Automotive Revolution, and part of the revolution is its low cost – starting at $30,000, and you can reserve one now for just $250 for delivery in 2024.

Details on the 2024 Pear are limited, but it likely will take style inspiration from the handsome Ocean and deliver a driving range of around 250 miles per charge.

Fisker has said it will be built in Ohio in partnership with electronics manufacturer Foxconn.

Fisker is currently taking reservations for the Pear and says deliveries of the new SUV will start in 2024 with prices starting around $30,000, which is about the same price as the Chevy Volt and a lot more sexy and with a lot more driving range than the GM model.

GM just slashed prices on the Volt by as much as $6,000, to just under $30,000, in an effort to boost sales.

Ultra and Extreme upgraded models cost $40,000 and $55,000.

Fisker Ocean is $40,000

While the PEAR being manufactured in the USA, the Ocean is being built by Austrian manufacturer Magna Steyr in front- and all-wheel-drive configurations.

According to Car and Driver, the base Ocean uses a 275-hp motor and offers a range of around 250 miles. The all-wheel-drive Ultra and Extreme trims have two motors good for a combined 540 and 550 horsepower, respectively.

Prices will start under $40,000.

Let us know what you think about the Fisker Ocean, Fisker PEAR or Fisker Ronin – or what you think about EVs in general.
