Free Entry to US National Parks

free entry to national parks

Celebrate Presidents Day by visiting one of more than 400 national parks, preserves, historic sites and monuments FREE on Monday, Feb. 20, 2017.

That list includes sites associated with George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, the two presidents whose birthdays we are celebrating.

That would include the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, Federal Hall in New York City, where Washington took the oath of office, and Mt. Rushmore in North Dakota.

Today’s free admission is one of more than a dozen days every year the NPS grants free admission to the sites it administers.

The next period of free admission in 2017 are:

The weekends of April 15/16 and 22/23, celebrating National Park Week,

August 25, celebrating the National Park Service birthday

September 30, celebrating National Public Lands Day,

Veterans Weekend, November 11/12

Also as part of the 100th anniversary celebration, the NPS launched a Find Your Park initiative, to help you find a national, state or local park and get outdoors.

The free admission is for entrance fees, commercial tour fees, and transportation entrance fees. You still have to pay the fee for activities that require a reservation, camping sites, lodging, tours, concession, and other fees collected by third party vendors working within the park system are not included.

Here’s an alphabetical list of the 127 parks that usually have entrance fees, prepared by Travel & Leisure magazine  for the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, in 2016:
