Valentine’s Day turns most of us into romantics, at least for the day. If you get the urge, these are the best places for kissing, a marriage proposal, or both. Some are obvious choices, others not so.
Paris, France: The City of Lights and Love tops just about everybody’s list as a romantic destination., as the Our ‘pecking order’, so to speak, would be incomplete without the City of Lights and Love. Without besmirching the other classic places to smooch, Lonely Planet, for whatever reason, suggests doing it in Père Lachaise Cemetery. Not my choice, which would be a moonlight cruise on the River Seine.
New York City: Times Square has been an icon of romance since that world famous kiss celebrating the end of World War II. It’s especially romantic again this year with a public art display of a dozen ten-foot-high glittering gold hearts, inviting kissing, with or without selfies.
Hershey, Pennsylvania: This quiet township is home to the Hershey’s factory, which produces the famous Hershey Kisses. It’s okay to steal all the kisses you want in Hershey, but not from the assembly line.
Kissing, Germany: The act of puckering up was invented here. No, not really., in 1808. Kissing is in Bavaria, about 10 miles south of Augsburg, one of the romantic Medieval cities and towns along the Romantic Road. But the German word for kissing is “kussen”, so you would be kussen in Kissing.
Kissimmee, Florida: Just minutes from the famous Walt Disney World, Kissimmee has a smoochable name and invites romantic strolling through its historic downtown or a classic fairy tale kiss at Cinderella’s castle, Disneys version of the fabulous romantic castle of Neuschwanstein, also in Bavaria, pictured above.
Venice, Italy: Local legend maintains that lovers will find eternal happiness if they share a kiss while passing beneath the Bridge of Sighs on a sunset gondola ride. This legend of love does not apply to a gondola ride at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas.
Casablanca, Morocco: ”Kiss me, kiss me as if it were the last time” Ingrid Bergman told Humphrey Bogart. It was just one of the memorable romantic phrases that helped catapult the movie Casablanca to cult status. It also sealed with a kiss the status of Casablanca as a romantic city. Gaze into your lover’s eyes and whisper “we’ll always have Paris”.
